Introduction to Algebra: Module overview

  Algebra

Unit 10: Algebra

Now the fun begins!

Module Overview

Now that you’ve mastered the building blocks of Algebra, let’s dive in! In this module, we’ll learn what algebraic equations are and how they differ from the normal arithmetic operations you’ve been performing. We’ll use variables to represent unknown values and will practice setting up and solving basic algebraic equations.

Objectives

After this module, students will be able to:

  1. Define common algebraic terms.
  2. Explain the basic rules of algebra.
  3. Translate between verbal expressions and algebraic expressions.
  4. Solve one-step equations by substituting a known value for a variable.

Readings

Please complete the following readings and associated exercises.  Check your answers after completing every 3-5 problems and be sure to ask your instructor if you are having any difficulties.

  1. Algebra Skills, pages 37-40
  2. Steck-Vaughn Mathematical Reasoning: Student Book, pages 50-53
  3. Scoreboost: Algebraic Reasoning, pages 14-17

Practice

Click on the Assignments page to get some extra practice on these topics. These assignments do not affect your grade, so don't be afraid to mess up.  Please ask your instructor for help on any problems that are giving you trouble.

Additional Resources (optional)

Below are some additional resources to support your work in this module.

  1. Order of operations becomes very important as we begin to work through Algebra.  Remember good ol' PEMDAS?  Here's a short " Download cheat sheet" if you need something to refer back to as a reminder on order of operations.
  2. Here are two other "cheat sheets" that you might find useful: (1) common definitions Links to an external site.
