Prepositions with Accusative

bis: to, as far as, until, by

• has a spatial meaning expressing a distance or movement to its end: Der Zug fährt bis Mannheim. (Often in combination with a second preposition like 'zu' or 'gegen': Ich gehe mit dir bis zur Haltestelle der Straßenbahn.)
• has a temporal meaning expressing a duration of time with the indication of its end: Bis 1954 haben meine Eltern in Berlin gelebt. Wir haben bis Mitternacht gearbeitet.
• has a modal meaning expressing a degree (always with a second preposition): Wir arbeiteten bis zur Erschöpfung.

durch: through

• has a spatial meaning expressing a movement through something: Er geht durch das Zimmer.
• has a modal meaning expressing means or instruments: Ich habe ihn durch eine Email benachrichtigt.
• has a temporal meaning expressing duration (in this case 'durch' has to be accompanied by 'hindurch' placed behind the noun: Wir arbeiteten durch die ganze Nacht hindurch.

für: for

• indicates an intention, beneficiary, or goal: Ich habe die Blumen für sie gekauft. Ich arbeite für mein Examen.
• has a modal meaning expressing a comparison: Für sein Alter kann das Kind sehr gut lesen.
• has a modal meaning expressing an exchange or a substitution: Für den Computer kann ich dir nur noch 50 Mark geben.
• has a temporal meaning expressing a limited time: Ich gehe für zwei Wochen an die Ostsee.

gegen: towards, against, compared with

• has a spatial meaning expressing a movement toward (a usually static) goal: Ich bin gegen einen Baum gefahren.
• has a temporal meaning expressing the approximate time: Er kommt gegen 4 Uhr.
• expresses a comparison: Gegen seinen Bruder ist er klein.

ohne: without

• has a modal meaning expressing a negation of circumstances or the use of means or instruments: Ohne Schlüssel kann ich die Tür nicht öffnen.
• has a conditional meaning: Ohne die Hilfe meiner Eltern kann ich nicht in den USA studieren. (If my parents do not support me...)

um: around, at

• has a spatial meaning expressing a movement around or a relationship toward a center: Sie ist um den ganzen Park gelaufen. Die Bäume stehen um einen Springbrunnen.
• has a temporal meaning expressing an approximate historical time frame: Das Gebäude wurde um 1750 gebaut.
• has a temporal meaning expressing the precise time as indicated by a watch: Sie kommt um 5 Uhr.
