Reciprocal Verbs

There is also a third use of the reflexive pronouns. If you have a situation in which two persons or more do something for or to each other you also use the reflexive pronoun:

Example:

• John und Thomas begegnen sich vor der Mensa.
• John und Thomas unterhalten sich.
• John und Thomas freunden sich an.

Usually these verbs can only be reflexive in the plural. They represent an action one can perform on or for another person, but not on or for oneself:

• John und Thomas begegnen sich vor der Mensa

means:

• John begegnet (dem) Thomas vor der Mensa und Thomas begegnet (dem) John vor der Mensa.

In all these cases, you may add einander (one another) or miteinander (with each other) to the reflexive pronoun or even use einander or miteinander instead of the reflexive pronouns.

• John und Thomas begegnen einander vor der Mensa.
• Sie unterhalten sich miteinander.
• Sie freunden sich miteinander an.
