Relative pronoun ‘was’
There are relative clauses whose main clauses have no antecedent to determine the gender and number of the relative pronoun. The antecedent is omitted for one reason or another. In these instances one uses was as the relative pronoun.
Examples:
Ich kann nicht vergessen, was ich gestern gesehen habe.
(but: Ich kann nicht das Unglück vergessen, das ich gestern gesehen habe.)
Er hat uns erzählt, was er in den USA erlebt hat.
(but: Er hat uns die Geschichten erzählt, die er in den USA erlebt hat.)
As you can see in the examples above, the antecedent is vaguely "understood" from the verbs involved.
Was is also used as a relative pronoun after alles, nichts, das, etwas, einiges, as well as after superlatives like das Beste, das Schönste.
Examples:
Alles, was ich weiß, habe ich im Kindergarten gelernt.
Nichts, was ich in der Zeitung gelesen habe, ist ganz korrekt.
Das, was ich überhaupt nicht mag, ist, wenn jemand lügt.
Das Schönste, was wir in Italien gesehen haben, war Venedig.
Now, if the verb in the main clause requires a prepositional phrase to complete its meaning, the omitted antecedent may be the object of that preposition. You cannot omit the preposition without losing the meaning of the verb! The preposition has to be present in the main clause as a compound form of da- and the preposition.
Examples:
Ich kann mich nicht daran erinnern, was er gesagt hat. (sich erinnern an)
Er hat mit mir darüber gesprochen, was er seinem Professor sagen möchte. (sprechen über)
Er interessiert sich sehr dafür, was wir im Sommerkurs machen. (sich interessieren für)
If the verb in the relative clause introduced by was requires a prepositional phrase, you should use the compound form of the prepositional object using wo-.
Examples:
Ich weiß nicht, worüber ihr gesprochen habt. (sprechen über)
Ich kann dir nicht sagen, wofür sie sich interessiert. (sich interessieren für)
Ich habe ihr gesagt, worum sie sich kümmern muss. (sich kümmern um)
However, nobody will find it strange or really incorrect if you would say:
Ich weiß nicht, über was ihr gesprochen habt.
Ich kann dir nicht sagen, für was sie sich interessiert.
Ich habe ihr gesagt, um was sie sich kümmern soll.
