Strong and Weak Verbs - Present Tense
Here is the present tense of a strong (fahren) and a weak (machen) verb. We have given the stem a different color from the ending so you can see immediately where the stem ends and the ending begins. In the last column you see the endings.

Notice: the 2nd and 3rd person singular of the strong verbs change the stem vowel if it is a back vowel (a, o, u, or sometimes e); to generalize, an 'a' becomes 'ä,' an 'o' becomes 'ö,' a 'u' becomes 'ü,' and an 'e' becomes 'i'. If you'd like to know why, read the vowels page and the umlaut page.
