In this module, the discussion focuses on the underlying technology of radio systems. The text reviews concepts about the radio spectrum, frequencies, radio systems that ensure consistent communication, and interoperability. Finally, there is a review of radio standards and maintenance of the system.

Objectives

After completing this module, students will be able to:

    • Describe the difference between a simplex and trunked radio system.
    • Recognize the difference in the way analog and digital radio signals operate.
    • Articulate the importance of the SAFECOM interoperability continuum.
    • Describe the importance of redundancy for the dispatch network.
