Module 4: Communications and Information Management

This chapter will examine the common communications infrastructures utilized by many emergency response agencies. The chapter will also discuss options available for responders when the communications infrastructure is destroyed as a result of a disaster. Finally, emerging technology will be addressed, both in usage now and in the future of emergency response.

Objectives

After this module, the student will be able to:

  • Identify NIMS interoperability requirements
  • Describe what wireless information networks are
  • Explain the different types of data technologies
  • Explain Global Positioning System/Geographic Information Systems
  • Be familiar with developments in  personal computers and information management

Discussions

Select one of the communications or information management systems discussed in Chapter 6 and provide your insight on why you believe this technology will enhance public safety capabilities in the future. 

 

Assignments

Select a major historical fire that has involved a high-rise building, hospital or nursing home. Discuss lessons learned from the fire. Also include how proper planning could possibly improve the outcome.  Lastly, discuss your specific planning initiatives you would enact  to enhance life safety.   The paper should be a minimum of 6 pages of content.
