Formatting Text & Media Language Accents

Located under the More Options (︙) menu in the sidebar, the Language Accents tool has three important functions. It allows you to:

  1. Easily insert foreign language characters into the Canvas rich content editor.
  2. Insert a Word/Phrase, Paragraph, or Block of text that is tagged as being written in a specific language for screen readers and other assistive technologies.
  3. Make the Language Accents tool available to students in Discussions, Assignment submissions, or Canvas Classic Quizzes.

Tip for Language Accents

Whenever you need to insert foreign language passages into the Canvas editor, use the Language Accents tool to tag them for assistive technologies.

Instructions

Add and tag foreign language characters

  1. In the sidebar, select Language Accents  from the  More Options (︙) dropdown. The Language Accents window will open.

  2. In the Canvas editor, place your cursor where you want to add the foreign language character, phrase, or passage.
  3. In the Language Accents window:

    1. Choose the desired language in the Select a Language dropdown.
    2. To tag the content for assistive technologies, choose +Word/Phrase for passages less than a full paragraph, +Paragraph for a single paragraph, or + Block for multiple paragraphs. A dotted border with a language tag will appear in the Canvas editor.

    3. Replace the placeholder text with the desired text, selecting foreign language characters as needed from the Language Accents window.
    4. Note that as you select characters to enter them into the editor, they appear in large type in the upper left of the Language Accents window, along with the keyboard shortcuts for the character in Windows ( ) and Mac OS ( ).
    5. Check the "Let students use selected language in responses" box to enable the Language Accents tool for students in specific assignments, discussion topics, and quizzes.

Enable the Language Accents tool for students

To let students use the Language Accents tool for responses to a specific Assignment, Discussion, or Classic Quiz (not available for new quizzes):

  1. Open the assignment, discussion topic, or quiz in edit mode.
  2. Open the Language Accents tool.
  3. Check the "Let students use selected language in responses" box.
  4. Save the content.

Repeat the above process for each assignment, discussion topic, or quiz in which you want to enable the Language Accents tool for students.
