Module 1
Mass Casualty Management & Mass Casualty
In Module 1, we will examine what constitutes a mass casualty incident and its impact on a community’s preparedness to deal with such incidents. We will look at the World Health Organization’s Mass Casualty Management Systems and their work assisting communities in developing robust casualty management protocols. Finally, we will learn how to develop our own plan designed to help you and your community develop emergency management plans for mass casualty incidents.

Mass Casualty Guidelines World Health Organization Citation
The World Health Organization's Mass Casualty Guidelines (2007) provide essential frameworks for communities to develop robust casualty management protocols. These guidelines emphasize a structured approach to managing large-scale emergencies, focusing on triage, treatment, and transportation of victims. They advocate for pre-established plans, coordination among various agencies, and comprehensive training for emergency responders. By assisting communities in implementing these protocols, the guidelines aim to enhance preparedness, ensure efficient use of resources, and improve the overall response to mass casualty incidents, ultimately reducing mortality and morbidity during disasters. These efforts are vital for building resilient and responsive healthcare systems.
Disaster Risk Management—Mass Casualty Management Citation
FEMA's Disaster Risk Management Fact Sheet is an invaluable resource for learning about disaster management. It provides essential information on risk assessment, mitigation strategies, and emergency response planning. Utilizing this fact sheet helps individuals and organizations better understand and prepare for potential hazards, enhancing community resilience and disaster readiness.
