Course Syllabus
Welcome to the 2016 UF AHEC Afternoon of Learning program, part of the AHEC Tobacco Training and Cessation - Initial Training (ATTAC-IT) program.
Since 2007, the UF AHEC Program has trained nearly 7,000 health professions students in treating tobacco dependence. In the tradition of the students that have completed the Afternoon of Learning program, you will take the knowledge you gain today into the rest of your health professions career. You have the opportunity to help patients quit, or resist initiating, tobacco use. You are a key component of our efforts to treat tobacco dependence. Begin your healthcare career by helping one another understand the importance of addressing this population-level issue across the healthcare continuum and your respective disciplines.
Learning how to treat tobacco dependence through this interprofessional education experience offers you the opportunity to gain competencies that will be of benefit to your future practice. Learning how to work well within interdisciplinary provider teams, practicing motivational interviewing with patients and helping patients change risk behaviors are all outcomes of this training in tobacco treatment—outcomes that many of you will carry forward into your upcoming Putting Families First and other patient-centered, community-based clinical experiences.
The UF AHEC Program, with funding from Tobacco Free Florida, sponsors this training, working closely with interdisciplinary UF Health faculty to develop and deliver the program each year.
You’re part of a group of over 700 students participating today in a powerful interprofessional learning experience. By interacting and engaging with students from the disciplines of Dentistry, Medicine (including future physicians and PAs), Nursing, Pharmacy and Public Health and Health Professions, you can see the benefits of working as part of a collaborative healthcare team. This is what we value at UF, and it is also consistent with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Clinical Practice Guideline for Treating Tobacco Dependence, which stresses the importance of education in tobacco treatment for all clinical disciplines.
