Course Syllabus

Upon completion of this course, students will:

  1. Understand how the educational system and historical reforms to it have shaped the German economy and business world.
  2. Apply understanding of the organization and development of the German economy and business world to global economic and business developments. 
  3. Apply understanding of how geography has and continues to influence the German economy and business on a global level
  4. Evaluate the effects of war and genocide on the German economy.
  5. Evaluate the effects of state and economic systems post-WWII on today’s German economy.
  6. Create approaches for navigating the differences between the US and German economic organization in business.
  7. Create approaches for inter-culturally competent exchanges between US and German cultures.

The following topics will be covered:

  • The specific organization of the German economy and business world
  • The reasons why the German economy and business world developed into its specific form
  • The geographical factors that influenced the history of the German economy and business world
  • The historical reforms that shaped the German economy and business world
  • The educational system the German economy is based on
  • The results of two World Wars as well as the role of the German business world in the genocide committed in Nazi-Germany and their effects on the German economy
  • The value system and the economic organization West Germany was build on after WW II.
  • The effects of Germany’s separation in two states and two significantly different economic systems after World War II
  • The differences between the US and German economic organization and ideologies
  • The differences between US and German culture
