CUR CURE Faculty Resources

We are delighted in your interest in learning more about CURE classes. For the past 5 years, the Center for Undergraduate Research (CUR) has been working with faculty to help integrate their research into the classroom. Some notable highlights include:

  • Over 1600 first year students have participated in 230 CURE courses
  • Courses have been offered by 75 faculty from 30 departments in 8 colleges
  • Class sizes have ranged from 1-50 with a typical size of 6-8 students
  • Over 80% of students that participated in 2022 were very or moderately satisfied with their overall CURE experience.
  • Over 85% of professors that participated in 2023 "strongly or somewhat" agreed that CURE student research helped them progress towards primary research goals.

CURE classes are defined as a class of students working on a research question with unknown outcomes or solutions that are of interest to external stakeholders. These classes integrate the use of scientific practices, discovery, collaboration, iteration, and relevant work.

For faculty, CURE classes could expand their research group, accelerate existing projects, collect publishable data, and offer graduate and postdoctoral students a unique teaching experience.

For students, CURE classes represent experiential learning opportunities which have students learning in a real-world context that can lead to professional and personal growth. For example, student assessment of the 37 CURE classes offered in Spring of 2022 demonstrated that students reported gains in 25 research skills items (with the largest gains in 'learning a topic in-depth' and 'learning to persevere at a task'). Many students decide to remain in the same research laboratory as the CURE or use the experience to enter another research laboratory.

In this Canvas course, you will find all the information you may need to embark on your CURE journey. This site provides guidelines, examples, and resources but faculty have creative freedom over the course.  The course resources were developed by Dr. Christine Miller Dept. of Entomology, Dr. Ginny Greenway, Imperial College of London, and the Center for Undergraduate Research.
