This is the second course of a three-semester beginning Latin series at the University of Florida. The course covers chapters 15-27 of Wheelock’s Latin and continues to introduce students to the vocabulary, grammar, and syntax of the Latin language. To do this, students will translate from Latin to English and English to Latin. Students will leave this class prepared to succeed in third-semester Latin.

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • recognize different forms of declensions and conjugations;
  • acquire a rich vocabulary, which constitutes an introduction to Roman culture;
  • translate from Latin to English and English to Latin.
  • Participation is 15% of your grade and will be assessed every day by taking attendance. Be present in class or, when offered, at the live, real-time, synchronous zoom sessions. Participate actively by asking and answering questions, by reciting paradigms, translating sentences, declining nouns, and conjugating verbs. If you are joining from remote, make sure that you can log in to the zoom sessions in a place where you feel comfortable speaking to the group and where you can hear your classmates easily. See the Recorded Course Statement below.

  • Quizzes are 20% of your grade and will be assessed every week in online quizzes. You can take the quiz up to three times and the highest score is recorded.

  • Unit exams are 20% of your grade and are assessed twice: two exams worth 10% each.

  • Homework is 30% of your grade and is assessed weekly.

  • Final Exam: 15% half focused on grammar and half on translation. The translation exam is cumulative since it assumes all the grammar and vocabulary of the first 27 chapters of Wheelock.

Here are some tips that will help you get the most of this course:

  • Schedule "class times" for yourself. It is important to do the coursework on time each week. You will receive a reduction in points for work that is turned in late!
  • Read ALL of the material contained on this site. There is a lot of helpful information that can save you time and help you meet the objectives of the course.
  • Print out the Course Schedule located in the Course Syllabus and check things off as you go.
  • Ask for help or clarification of the material if you need it. Raise your hand of the beginning of, during, or after class. Post in the discussion board or send a message to your instructor.
  • Do not wait to ask questions! Waiting to ask a question might cause you to miss a due date.
  • Do your work well before the due dates. Sometimes things happen. If your computer goes down when you are trying to submit an assignment, you'll need time to troubleshoot the problem.
  • To be extra safe, back up your work to an external hard drive, thumb drive, or through a cloud service.
