Course Description

Welcome to MAC1114: Trigonometry! This course is the sequel to MAC1140 Precalculus Algebra, and serves as an introduction to Trigonometry. Topics include a basic introduction to trigonometric functions, graphing trigonometric functions, inverse trigonometric functions, and analytic trigonometry.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Define and evaluate trigonometric objects such as trigonometric functions, inverse trigonometric functions, and identities.
  2. Use trigonometric objects to model applications.
  3. Use trigonometric identities to simplify expressions and verify identities through logical proof.

Course Requirements

Required Textbook

There is no required textbook for this course. Lecture notes will be provided in Canvas as the course progresses.

However, an open-resource textbook which is a good source for additional explanations and supplementary exercises is linked here. This textbook is supplemental only and is not required.

Attendance

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Materials/Supply Fees

There is no supply fee for this course.

Course Policies

Requirements for make-up exams, assignments, and other work in this course are consistent with university policies that can be found on UF's Attendance Policies website.

Late Submissions

No late submissions for homework or quizzes will be accepted for a grade without prior permission from the instructor.

 

Make-Up Exams

If you are participating in an official UF activity (such as music performances, athletic
competition or debate), you must contact the instructor at least one week prior to the event and you must present documentation. A make-up exam will be given soon after the exam date.

If illness or other extenuating circumstances cause you to miss an exam, contact the instructor immediately before the due date. Then, as soon as possible after you return to classes, bring/send the appropriate documentation to the course instructor. Course materials will be provided to you with an excused absence, and you will be given a reasonable amount of time to make up work. No make up materials will be provided for undocumented/unexcused absences.

 

Incomplete Policy

A grade of I (incomplete) will be considered only if you meet the Math Department criteria which is found at https://www.math.ufl.edu. If you meet the criteria you must see the instructor before the beginning of finals week to be considered for an I. A grade of I only allows you to make up your incomplete work. You cannot redo any previously completed work.

 

Changes

The instructor reserves the right to make changes to this syllabus as necessary. Any such changes will be announced both in-class and as an announcement on Canvas.

UF Policies

University Policy on Accommodating Students with Disabilities

Students with disabilities requesting accommodations should first register with the Disability Resource Center (352-392-8565) by providing appropriate documentation. Once registered, students will receive an accommodation letter that must be presented to the instructor when requesting accommodation. Plagiarism

The Student Honor Code and Student Conduct Code states that:

"A Student must not represent as the Student’s own work all or any portion of the work of another. Plagiarism includes but is not limited to:

  • Stealing, misquoting, insufficiently paraphrasing, or patch-writing.
  • Self-plagiarism, which is the reuse of the Student’s own submitted work, or the simultaneous submission of the Student’s own work, without the full and clear acknowledgment and permission of the Faculty to whom it is submitted.
  • Submitting materials from any source without proper attribution.
  • Submitting a document, assignment, or material that, in whole or in part, is identical or substantially identical to a document or assignment the Student did not author."

Any requests for make-ups (assignments, exams, etc.) due to technical issues should be accompanied by the ticket number received from the UF Computing Help Desk when the problem was reported to them. The ticket number will document the time and date of the problem. You should email your instructor within 24 hours of the technical difficulty if you wish to request a make-up.

Mathematics Assistance

The Teaching Center Math Lab, located at SE Broward Hall, offers free informal tutoring. You may want to attend different hours to find the tutors with whom you feel most comfortable.
