SONGS Initiative Extra Credit
Prior to the end of this semester, you can attend up to two lectures, panel discussions, or webinars connected to the Sustainable Online Network for Global-Cultural Studies Links to an external site. Initiative. Upcoming live events will be announced in advance.
In place of one of these live events, you can instead watch one recording of a past SONGS event Links to an external site..
Each event that you attend/watch is worth an additional 1.5% of your total course grade. Therefore, you can earn up to 3% worth of extra credit in this course.
In order to receive extra credit for attending/watching an event, you must complete the following for each event:
- Reply to this discussion Links to an external site. and summarize what the lecture, discussion, or webinar is about. Who speaks and what are they talking about? What kinds of questions are asked and how do the speakers respond? What do you find most interesting about what is discussed in the event, bearing in mind the broader symposium topic to which it may be connected? Make sure that your comments cover the event in a manner that indicates you watched it carefully from beginning to end. Write 250-500 words.
- Reply briefly (3-5 sentences) to any other posts in this discussion that mention the event you attended/watched.
- Contribute to an online public discussion of the event in the discussion box you will find at the bottom of SONGS webpage for the event. Do your very best with your comments/questions to engage in a way that is perceptive, constructive, and invites further discussion/questions that could follow up on the points you make. You will see that students and some of the original speakers continue to be engaged in the ongoing online discussions many years later.
