Overview

Flipped advising supports the NACADA Links to an external site. core value of “advising is teaching” by applying teaching and learning concepts to academic advising in a way that promotes student engagement, introspection, and self-authorship. Flipped advising utilizes the learning management system to house important resources, promote interaction, and guide students through modules of content in preparation of their advising session.

The flipped advising model is most effective when advising units begin by defining their advising goals, student outcomes, and advising philosophy. The focus of this module is to introduce you to the concept of flipped advising and provide the tools to get you started with the first phase of adopting a flipped advising model.

Objectives

At the end of this module, advisors will be able to:

  • Identify characteristics and benefits of adopting a flipped advising model and determine if it is an appropriate choice for their advising unit.
  • Create advising goals, student outcomes, and an advising philosophy that promotes student-centered advising.
  • Outline a plan and identify resources for designing and developing a flipped advising course.
