Arrange a time and meet with all your group members in Zoom and record this group work which should take ca. 20-30 minutes if everyone is prepared.
Choose one group member to create and host the Zoom conference, and the rest of the group will join the conference.
Instructions for creating/hosting, joining, and recording your Zoom conference are below.
Objective
Analyze Determiners, Adjectives, Adverbs and Predicates, Weak Forms of Adjectives, Strong Forms of Adjectives, and Mixed Forms of Adjectives by working with a dialog and by creating accurate statements in German that use these structures.
Overview
This week's group activity will deal with Kapitel 6 Dialog, Determiners, Adjectives, Adverbs and Predicates, Weak Forms of Adjectives, Strong Forms of Adjectives, and Mixed Forms of Adjectives.
There are two parts to the group activity this week:
1) Group Work with Chapter Dialog.
2) Grammar Writing Tasks using this Worksheet: Download Kapitel 6 Woche 3 Google Doc Worksheet (access this worksheet by first signing onto https://cloud.it.ufl.edu/collaboration-tools/g-suite/ (Links to an external site.)).

1. Group Work with Dialog
Before you meet with your group, read and listen to Kapitel 6 Dialog several times (it is recommended to recite it at least five times aloud, as repetition aids learning of grammar and vocabulary). Pay attention to the pronunciation of the native speakers in the dialog. Then practice reading the text aloud to yourself.
Study the vocabulary of the dialog using the flashcards (observe that the flashcards have audio so that you can practice the pronunciation of the words).
Make sure you understand every sentence in the dialog. If you have a problem, ask your group members for help. If the whole group does not understand a sentence, send an email to the instructor. Before you begin this assignment, consult with your group members and divide the roles up so that each person has approximately the same amount to read.
Step 1: Warm-up Pronunciation Practice
Once you can all see and hear each other clearly, do this warm-up Pronunciation Practice:
By the time you reach this point, you should have practiced pronunciation of the Dialog enough that it shows. Your pronunciation doesn't have to be perfect, but you should be able at least to approximate the sounds. One after the other, every group member should pronounce each word in the list below one after the other. Pronounce each word first before clicking on the sound file in order to demonstrate the independent work that you have already done on pronunciation (by practicing with the Dialog recordings on the Dialog page). After pronouncing each word yourself (at least) once, only then click on the sound file to make sure you are approximating how the word sounds as closely as possible.
- abends (the “a“- sound predominates in the pronunciation of this word!: open your mouth wide and say: “AHHH-bents“)
- „Zum Seppl“
- Räume
- Schülerin (gentle back “r“ sound)
- die Amerikaner (gentle back “r“ sound on first “r“, and the vocalic “uh“ sound for the last “r“; the American “errr“ sound will give you away as one!)
- die unberührte Natur (with unberührte you have to try to make a gentle back “r“ merge into the pure “ü“ sound)
- eine sehr reiche intellektuelle Geschichte (“in“-“teh“-“lek“-“tu“-“ell“-“uh“; the “ch“ in Geschichte is the same middle one as in ich)
- Marktwirtschaft (remember that you don’t hear an “r“ sound in this word when you pronounce this correctly; it’s something like: “Maa-uhkt- wirtschaft“)
- viele (“fee-leh“)
Step 2: Perform the Dialog
Open up the Dialog in a new window and read at a normal pace, paying attention to pronouncing every word as well as you can.
2. Grammar Writing Task
In your ongoing Zoom conference, one group member will create a clean copy of the Kapitel 6 Woche 3 Google Doc Worksheet Links to an external site. (Links to an external site.) and share it with the rest of the group (to do so, one group member will click Share at the top right of the document, then type in their group members names and click Done). The group will then complete this shared worksheet together during the meeting so that your instructor can assess your individual preparedness and collaborative effort (see grading rubric below).
Review the Kapitel 6 Week 3 grammar topics before doing this group work so that you are prepared to review your classmates' work and help each other correct any errors:
- Determiners
- Adjectives
- Adverbs and Predicates
- Weak Endings of Adjectives
- Strong Endings of Adjectives
- Mixed Adjective Endlings following ein- Words
Use this Grammar Cruncher for this chapter to access chapter vocabulary, forms, and English definitions:
Students should do their best in their sentences to practice the 1st person (ich, wir), 2nd person (du, ihr, Sie), and 3rd person forms of verbs.
If you are assigned to ask questions in a given exercise, practice here as well using 1st, 2nd, and 3rd person perspectives, switching as logically needed when using 1st and 2nd person forms, for example: answer a “du” question with “ich”; an "ich" question with "du" or "Sie"; an “ihr” question with “wir”; a "wir" question with " ihr" or "Sie" or even "wir" (assuming other than the questioner in a given collective has the answer!); etc. Try to use as many different words and combinations as possible.
Check all of your work as a group for correctness!
When you are finished, designate a group member to save the Google Doc Worksheet with all your individual work in it and upload it into this assignment before the deadline (it will be most practical and straightforward if the meeting host does this).
