Module 5: Transportation Disaster

Transportation accidents can be divided into three general classes: those in the air (landing and takeoff of aircraft), those on the ground (highway and railroad disasters) and  those on water (rivers, lakes and seas). On responding to a transportation accident, the emergency responder can assume that people will be endangered and that rescue operations might be the first necessary action.

Objectives

After this module, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the types of aviation disasters
  • Identify the causes of highway accidents
  • Explain the causes of marine disasters
  • Describe the difference between auto, railroad and marine emergency actions

Discuss your department's hazardous materials unit(s), plans and response in the event of a disaster. If your Department does not have a hazardous materials unit, what contingency plans does your agency have. If you are a non- first responders do you believe a hazardous materials unit is required in every department/ jurisdiction, why? why not?

Assignments

Research your jurisdiction's Local Emergency Response Committee (LEPC). Identify who and what agencies make up the LEPC, who is the lead organization and who chairs the LEPC.  Also, discuss the history of the LEPC. Lastly, discuss the State Emergency Response Commission (SERC) and the role they play with Hazmat.
